Banbury Bill - Double Step Handkerchief Dance
FIGURE & CHORUS

Each FIGURE is danced to the the A part of the music and varies as the dance progresses as descibed below.

The CHORUS involves each of the three 'corners' and, again, varies as the dance progresses and takes place to three B parts of the music.

Hand movements are throwing the hands forward from the chest on the off-beat. All figures end with a step on the right foot and a jump (caper) landing on the left foot with a slight hop on landing.

DANCE SEQUENCE

Dance up the set, then all turn out and dance down the set.

The first CHORUS involves each of the three corners meeting and returning to place. Two side-steps leading with the right hand, a step and caper facing your corner, then back-step into place.

The next FIGURE (Half-gyp) involves passing your partner by the right shoulder, without turning round, back to place, then passing him by the left shoulder.

The second CHORUS involves corners crossing to opposite corner. Two side-steps leading with the right hand, a step and caper facing your corner, then back-step into your corner's place.

The next FIGURE (whole-gyp) involves dancing a circle facing your partner, first in a clockwise direction, then in an anti-clockwise direction.

The third CHORUS involves corners crossing to opposite corner again (ie. returning to original place). Two side-steps leading with the right hand, a step and caper facing your corner, then back-step into your own place.

The next FIGURE, the hey, involves 1-3-5 and 2-4-6 dancing on their own side of the set. Number 1 turns out from the set and dances to number 5's position, passing between 3 and 5 on the way. The second half of the hey involves number 1 dancing back to place by turning out and, again, passing between 3 and 5.

[Number 5's track in the hey is the reverse of number 1's. He dances to number 1's position, passing between numbers 1 and 3, then back to place. Number 3 follows number 1 throughout. This means he finishes each half of the hey in his own position and passes between numbers 1 and 5.]

The final CHORUS is the same as the first chorus.

The final FIGURE is the rounds. All dance halfway round the set in a clockwise direction, turn out and dance back. Finish with a step and caper facing into the centre with hands held high.
